77th Precinct covering Crown Heights and Prospect Heights
Man robbed at gunpoint
A man of unknown age was robbed at gunpoint Dec. 27, police said.
The victim was walking at 10:30 pm on the corner of Troy Avenue and Bergen Street when two perpetrators approached him. While pointing a silver gun at him, the other rifled through his pockets taking $40.
The two bandits then fled on foot. Police are investigating.

New Year’s Eve shooting

A 50-year-old man was shot in the groin Dec. 31 in front of 234 Schenectady Avenue, police said.
Upon responding to the scene, which occurred about 10:40 pm, the man was taken to Kings County Hospital where he is expected to recover.
Police are investigating the possibility that the wound was self-inflicted.

Knifed over a job

A 20-year-old man was stabbed four times over a day labor job dispute Dec. 30, police said.
The incident unfolded shortly after noon at the New York City Department of Sanitation Garage, 1698 Pacific Street, when day laborers were being picked to help clear snow. Two perpetrators allegedly attacked the victim after accusing him of putting his application on the top of a pile.
The victim was stabbed twice in the back and twice in the head, and is expected to recover. The perpetrators fled and remain at large.

Newborn dies in snowstorm
A newborn female baby died shortly after being born in the driving snowstorm Dec. 27, police said.
The mother delivered the baby in front of 97 Brooklyn Avenue at about 4:05 pm. It took police and emergency medical workers a while to arrive due to the storm.
The baby was declared dead on arrival at Interfaith Hospital.

Clocked with pliers
A 19-year-old woman was hit under the eye with pliers following a verbal dispute on Dec. 28, police said.
The incident unfolded about 3 pm at 227 Kingston Avenue.
The victim was taken to Interfaith Hospital where she was treated and released. Police are investigating.

Scream stops robber
A 48-year-old man thwarted a robbery on Dec. 30 after his screaming scared off two perpetrators, police said.
The perpetrators approached the man as he walked on the corner of Albany Avenue and Sterling Place at about 6 pm. When one pulled a silver handgun he screamed and they fled. Police canvassed the area and the matter remains under investigation.

Woman survives being strangled

A 24-year-old woman survived being strangled Dec. 31 by an ex-boyfriend from which she has an order of protection, police said.
The perpetrator entered the woman’s premises at about 4:45 pm on Sterling Place and started strangling her before fleeing. When police responded and were at the scene he called her several times and stated, “I’m going to kill you. I have nothing to lose.”
The two have a child in common and the matter remains under investigation.

Infant found dead

Police responding to a call found a dead female baby on Jan. 3, police said.
Police were called to 1045 Saint Johns Place at about 5 pm and found the child unresponsive and lying face-up in her crib. The child was later pronounced dead.
Police are investigating the incident.

Man stabbed following dispute
A man of unknown age was stabbed multiple times Jan. 2 but is expected to survive, police said.
The assault occurred at about 11:15 am at 1226 Sterling Place following a verbal dispute. The perpetrator used a pocketknife and fled following the stabbing.

79th Precinct covering Bedford-Stuyvesant

Violent crime down for the year
Preliminary police data shows that violent crime in the precinct jurisdiction is down dramatically for 2010.
According to unofficial year-end statistics, there were 12 murders last year compared to 15 in 2009.  Reported shootings were down 40 percent with 43 incidents last year as compared to 71 in 2009.
Shooting victims were also down with 56 last year as compared to 85 in 2009.
Overall, major felony crime was up about four percent including robbery (up 15 percent) and burglary (up 10 percent).


More cops added to precinct

Local residents will see an increased police presence in the community after 66 new cops were deployed at the 79th Police Precinct recently.
The cops recently graduated from the police academy and were deployed at the precinct.
Deputy Inspector Peter Bartoszek, commanding officer of the precinct, said the rookie cops would be deployed in the precinct’s Impact Zone along the Fulton Street commercial corridor and the northeast portion of the precinct covering the Marcy, Sumner and Tompkins public housing developments.

81st Precinct covering Stuyvesant Heights
Murder, rape up in 2010
Both murder and rape were up sharply in 2010 within the 81st Police Precinct jurisdiction, according to unofficial police data.
There were 17 murders in 2010 as compared to 13 in 2009. There were 24 reported rapes last year as compared to 11 in 2009.
Overall felony crime was up about 9 percent for the year including felony assaults, which was up nearly 30 percent. There were 317 reported felony assaults in 2010 compared to 244 in 2009.
However, burglary was down nearly six percent with 239 reported incidents in 2010 as compared to 254 in 2009. Car thefts were down nearly 29 percent with 82 reported incidents last year as compared to 115 in 2009.

Gas station robbed
A brazen bandit held up the Gulf gas station at 140 Vanderbilt and Myrtle Avenues, police said.
The alleged perpetrator first went in the gas station about 6 pm, Monday, December 27 and bought a coffee, according to witnesses. He then walked out briefly before reentering the shop brandishing a handgun in a napkin and ordering everyone on the floor.
The gunman then rifled through the cash drawer taking about $700 before fleeing on foot.
The matter remains under police investigation.

Woman mugged
Three cowardly thugs mugged a 36-year-old woman as she walked down the street Dec. 28, police said.
The victim was walking on Greene and Clinton Avenues at about 7:30 pm, when the three perpetrators grabbed her from behind and pushed her to the ground before grabbing her handbag and taking off on foot.
The handbag contained about $600, according to a police report.

Subway robbery

A 31-year-old woman had her phone snatched as she waited for the A train, police said.
The woman was waiting for the train at the Fulton Street and South Portland Avenue station just after midnight, Wednesday, Dec. 29 when a male perpetrator snatched it out of her hand causing the victim to fall. The perpetrator then fled down the subway platform and escaped back onto the street.

Woman finds apartment ransacked

A 24-year-old woman returning home after a few days out of town for the Christmas holiday found her apartment ransacked, police said.
The woman, who lives at 467 Vanderbilt Avenue, came home at about 6 pm, Dec. 29 to find no sign of forced entry, but her apartment in disarray.
The thief made off, with among other items, a 42-inch high-definition television, three laptops and about $1,000 with several items missing.

Applebee’s purse snatch
A 34-year-old woman had her purse snatched as she enjoyed a night at the Applebee’s Restaurant on the corner of the Flatbush Avenue Extension and DeKalb Avenue, police said.
The woman noticed the pocketbook, which was on the back of her chair, was missing shortly after midnight Dec. 31.
She then reported it to police who are investigating the matter.

New Year’s Eve Melee

Two people were arrested following a fight on in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day, police said.
The incident unfolded about 3:55 am, Jan. 1 when police responded to a call in the front of 910 Fulton Street after a man punched a 26-year-old woman causing her teeth to be knocked out.
When the police arrived on the scene they arrested the attacker on assault charges and the woman with him for resisting arrest.

Robbed of twenty dollars

Two perpetrators punched and smashed a 24-year-old woman with a bottle before robbing her of $20, police said.
The mugging occurred at about 1:20 am, Jan. 1 inside an apartment at 170 South Portland Avenue.
After escaping with the $20 and the victim’s cell phone, she was taken to an undisclosed hospital where she received stitches to her forehead and lip.

New Year’s Eve Death
A 26-year-old man was charged with misdemeanor assault after getting in a fight with a 51-year-old man who died following the incident, police said.
According to published reports, Angel Diaz, 26, got into the altercation with Michael Ketter, 51, after Ketter tried to enter a house party on Carlton Avenue. Diaz wound up punching and shoving Ketter, who fell to the ground hitting his head. Ketter was unconscious when police arrived at the scene and was later pronounced dead at Brooklyn Hospital.
The Brooklyn district attorney’s office charged Diaz with misdemeanor assault because no weapon was used and because there was no intent to kill Ketter, according to published reports.

Robbery on Lafayette Avenue

A 24-year-old woman was pushed to the ground and robbed Jan.2, police said.
The woman was walking at about 7:25 pm on the northwest corner of Lafayette Avenue and Ashland Place when an unknown perpetrator pushed her to the ground and grabbed her purse.
The assailant made off with about $180. Police are investigating.

Cops assaulted
Two cops were treated and released from Wyckoff Hospital Jan. 2 after being attacked by a 39-year-old man in a domestic dispute, police said.
The cops responded to the dispute inside an apartment at 9 Monument Place about 7:50 pm where they found the man loud and highly intoxicated. The man allegedly swung at the two officers, hitting one in the face, while the other twisted an ankle in helping subdue him.
An arrest was made and charges are pending.
