Culture, Community,and Struggle

On July 1, 2023, from 10 AM-4 PM, the New York Chapter Of the National Association of Kawaida Organizations (NAKO) in conjunction with the 52nd Annual International Arts Festival (IAAFestival) will host its 34th Annual Symposium on Culture, Community, and Struggle. The symposium is designed to bring together leading scholars, intellectuals, and activists to discuss, and dialogue as well as offer concrete solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting the global African community.
For over three decades the Symposium on Culture, Community, and Struggle has served as the intellectual component of the International African Arts Festival, which will host its 52nd annual event over four days, July 1, thru July 4, 2023.
The first part of the program will show a film about the EAST, a major black power institution entitled “The Sun Rises in the East,” from 10:00 AM-11:30 AM. There will be a panel discussion after the film with Malika Iman, Akilah Mashariki and Dr. Segun Shabaka.


Some of the confirmed speakers are Larry Hamm, Chairman of People’s Organization for Progress (POP); Milton Allimadi, publisher of Black Star News; Neil Clark, musician; NY City Council and NY State Reparations Legislator Charles Barron, Maisha Ongoza, chairperson of Philadelphia NAKO; Mshinda Nyofu, M.S., Chairperson of Houston NAKO, and instructor for Urban Education at the University of Houston; Other invited speakers are Dr. Donald Moore, M.D., Dr. Jamila Codrington.
The symposium will take place across the street from the IAAFestival’s grounds at PS 287, located at 50 Navy Street Brooklyn, NY 11201(between Park and Flushing Ave.) near the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Manhattan Bridge in downtown Brooklyn.
