The Flying Dutchmen

84

By Eddie Castro

Last week we said good-bye to the summer of 2016. A summer that brought us some amazing games. Fall is here and there’s only one sport that comes to mind…..football. One of the high school teams Brooklynites should have an eye on this season is the boys from Erasmus Hall. If you didn’t believe the hype, well their performance this past Saturday, led by quarterback Oniel Stanbury, definitely turned some heads.

With poise and confidence, Stanbury aired out the ball at will leading his team to a 24-6 victory over the Lincoln Railsplitters, which marked the team’s first loss of the young season. It was also a statement-like game for the Dutchmen. The past few seasons the team has been known to have a ground-and-pound (run the ball first) mentality on offense. This year the team is looking to create havoc on opponents by airing the ball out. Stanbury attacked Lincoln’s secondary defense early and often and started out by connecting on a 51-yard touchdown pass to teammate Aron Cruickshank. Stanbury finished the game with 138 all-purpose yards that included a four-yard touchdown run. The Lincoln squad had a few opportunities to make it a game, but Erasmus’ defense held its own and made things difficult for the Railsplitters quarterback Faruq Shittu. The team tied a bow on their victory with a couple of fourth-quarter touchdown runs by Cruickshank and teammate Jean Claude Kesler.

It was a big win for the program, however, the team knows they have much work to do and it is not the time to be making parade-like plans just yet. You can bet on this fact: if they can put it all together by running the ball and Stanbury continues to stay in the groove that he’s been in throwing the ball, and with a steady defense, the Dutchmen can very well be marching towards their goal in capturing a City Championship!

Sports Notes: (NFL FOOTBALL) The Giants fell short this past week to Washington after a costly penalty that put the Redskins in field goal range to seal the victory. The G-men will now head to Minnesota for a Monday night showdown against the surprising 3-0 Vikings. The New York Jets, with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, is looking to move forward from the nightmare of a game that saw him throw 6 interceptions in a 24-3 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Things do not get easier for Gang Green as quarterback Russell Wilson and the defense known as the “Legion of Boom” and the Seahawks come into town to battle the Jets.

I want to take time to recognize two athletes that the sports world lost on Sunday. Early Sunday morning it was reported that Miami Marlins ace pitcher Jose Fernandez, 24, was killed in a boat accident. Fernandez was definitely on his way towards a successful career as he was already recognized as one of the best young stars in the game of baseball today. His teammates, as well as the Cuban community, were completely stunned. It has truly been a sad week for baseball. Monday night’s game against the Mets, the team honored Fernandez by wearing his No.16 jersey and leaving their caps on the mound after an emotional game. The golf world took a huge loss too on Sunday night with the passing of Arnold Palmer. Known as the “King of Golf”, Arnold Palmer was 87. We here at Our Time press want to send our deepest condolences to both families.

Hillary Trips Trump at Debate

By David Mark Greaves

Hillary Trips Trump at Debate

We watched the debate at that quintessential neighborhood night spot, the Tip Top Bar and Grill on Franklin Avenue. We were the first ones there, and as the debate approached, the place quickly filled to standing-room-only with young white millennials who the U.S. Census reported outnumber baby boomers as a voting bloc. It is said that Mrs. Clinton has a problem with these voters, but those at the Tip Top tried to listen quietly, but they sometimes winced and frequently burst into laughter at Donald Trump’s various misspeaks and antics, while remaining attentive, supportive and relieved when Secretary Clinton spoke. Maybe the millennial generation in Bed-Stuy is different than elsewhere, but Clinton’s perceived lack of support with that age group may not be as serious as some think.

While the minds of most have already been made up, I saw a crack in the armor while talking to a Trump supporter in Troy, NY last weekend. He explained that America needed strong leadership, that Trump has business experience and that Hillary is a liar. I brought up that Trump didn’t want to release his tax returns because he pays no taxes, takes hundreds of millions in tax breaks “and that makes it harder for you and me”. He paused and regretfully said, “I know”.

Based on that anecdotal exchange, I suggest a full ad campaign citing the NY Times article on Trump’s $885 million in tax breaks with images of the properties with cost to the taxpayer alongside. Grand Hyatt Hotel, $359 million; Trump World Tower, $120 million; Riverside Blvd., $332 million. Last image could be Trump’s plane taking off with the words, “Dear Taxpayer, glad you like the plane, you paid for it”. Mix in the debate sound re: his not paying taxes ending with “That makes me smart” and it writes itself.

But seriously, living in a country that would elect Donald Trump as its president, would be like living in a town where the vigilantes have driven off the sheriff, we would have no idea of what to expect. I do know that spending four years listening to that man’s babble, and of having the fate of the nation in his hands is so abhorrent that I can only look with a frightening dread at the steeliness of his 85% support among Republican voters. When thinking of how they could stomach the man and allow him to represent them, I see how fervently they are keeping their eyes on the prize, the Supreme Court.

Securing this last of the checks and balances will put them in control of the nation’s purse and power for generations to come. Once in their hands, some will fill their pockets, while others, believing the South has risen again, will try to turn back time, and between them, cause all hell to truly break loose.

The most important thing to do now is to register and vote and tell everyone you know to do the same.  You will hear this many times in the days before the election: “Vote like your life depends on it.”

Go to the NYC Board of Elections website to register and find your polling place. vote.nyc.ny.us/ Last day to register is Friday, Oct. 14.

Trump Kept the Fact-Checkers Busy Last Night

From the Democratic National Committee

Last night Donald Trump once again kept fact-checkers busy. From his lies on supporting the Iraq War and doubling down on his birther lies, to his assertion that we would learn more from a financial disclosure instead of his hidden tax returns, Trump has shown an aversion to the truth. He is simply unfit for the Oval Office.

Washington Post: Fact Check: Yes, Trump did support the Iraq War

“I did not support the war in Iraq.” –Donald Trump – THE FACT CHECKER: This is just totally false. We have found no evidence of his early opposition to the invasion. Trump expressed lukewarm support the first time he was asked about it on Sept. 11, 2002, and was not clearly against it until he was quoted in the August 2004 Esquire cover story titled “Donald Trump: How I’d Run the Country (Better).”

New York Times: On Mr. Trump’s comments toward women

At the end of the debate, Mrs. Clinton slammed Mr. Trump for comments he made about a former Miss Universe, Alicia Machado, pointing out that he had called her “Miss Piggy” and “Miss Housekeeping.” Mr. Trump expressed confusion as to where those comments came from, but Ms. Machado has shared them in multiple interviews this year and Mr. Trump himself has admitted that he openly pushed her to lose weight when he took over the Miss Universe pageant.
Washington Post: Fact Check: Trump on crime statistics and stop-and-frisk

“In Chicago, they’ve had thousands of shootings. … Stop and frisk worked very well … it brought the crime way down [in New York City].” –Donald Trump – THE FACT CHECKER | Trump cherry-picks the increase in violence in Chicago, but this is not indicative of overall crime rates, which have been declining for years. Moreover, while Trump says stop-and-frisk policies should be enacted in Chicago as it was implemented in New York City, those policies have not been correlated with crime.

CNN: Fact Check: Trump and Climate Change
Clinton claimed Trump “thinks that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese,” a charge Trump immediately denied. Who’s telling the truth? On November 6, 2012, Trump tweeted, “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive. ,,, Our verdict: True. While Trump has wavered on the cause of climate change, he has repeatedly denied its existence and called it a hoax.

Vox: Donald Trump kept lying about his role in birtherism during the debate

Trump didn’t answer Holt’s question but instead responded with a barrage of barely comprehensible, conspiratorial accusations intended to put the blame for birtherism on Hillary Clinton (we’ll outline them further down) while then claiming that he did a “good job” by getting Obama “to produce the birth certificate.” . . . Overall, Trump refuses to take responsibility for spreading those lies, and is trying to distract voters from it with more lies.
Politifact: Donald Trump wrong that ‘you will learn more’ from financial disclosure form than from tax returns
Trump said, “You will learn more about Donald Trump by going down to the Federal Election Commission” to see the financial disclosure form than by looking at his returns. An observer would find valuable information about Trump’s personal financial holdings from his extensive (and legally required) financial-disclosure form. However, experts consider that a red herring. Unlike all presidential nominees since 1980, Trump has not released his tax returns, which experts say would offer valuable details on his effective tax rate, the types of taxes he paid, and how much he gave to charity, as well as a more detailed picture of his income-producing assets. Trump’s statement was, and is, inaccurate. We rate it False.
Politifact: Trump falsely tries to pin birtherism on Clinton insiders

Trump said that Clinton insiders pushed the rumor that Obama was not born in America. His first example, Doyle, actually was involved in firing a county level volunteer coordinator who spread the rumor that Obama was a Muslim. The president’s religion might overlap thematically, but it is distinct from rumors about his birthplace. Trump’s focus on Blumenthal lacks solid evidence. Blumenthal denies the allegation and the man who made it says he has no written proof. We rate this claim False.

Politico: Trump [again] says he opposed the Iraq War. That’s still false.

“Donald supported the invasion of Iraq” — Clinton

“Wrong.” — Trump

Trump was supportive of the Iraq invasion as far back as 2002, according to interviews the Donald did with Howard Stern, which were first uncovered by BuzzFeed. Stern asks Trump if he agreed with the Bush administration trying to sell the war. He said, “Yeah, I guess so.”

Huffington Post: Donald Trump Lies About His Iraq War Support, Wishes Someone Would Call Sean Hannity

Trump has lied about his position on the Iraq for for the entirety of his presidential campaign, saying he opposed the 2003 invasion from the start. He didn’t. In fact, as BuzzFeed has reported, Trump told Howard Stern in 2002 that he favored invading Iraq. “I wish the first time it was done correctly,” Trump said at the time, referring to the 1990 Gulf War.

Rolling Stone: Trump’s Big Debate Lie on Global Warming

Trump came out like a dervish, yelling and badgering Clinton, seeking to knock her on her heels. He didn’t succeed. Clinton, in a fire-red power suit, weathered Trump’s opening barrage with a smile. . . Clinton, after outlining her plan to make America a clean-energy superpower, hit Trump as a denier: “Donald thinks that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese,” she said. “I think it’s real.”Trump then lied. Flat out lied. In a night full of lies, Trump’s attempt to disavow climate denial was “bigly” the biggest.

The Daily Beast: Unrepentant Donald Trump: My Birther Lies Were Awesome

Donald Trump again defended his so-called birther crusade on Monday night. . . Holt continued to press Trump on why he continued the birther effort even after Obama released it in 2011. As recently as this January, Trump expressed doubt that Obama was born in the country.

Mother Jones: Did Trump Call Global Warming a Chinese Hoax? (Yes. And Tonight He Lied About It.)

According to Donald Trump, Donald Trump never supported the Iraq war; he never called pregnancy an “inconvenience” for employers; and he certainly never—ever—called climate change a Chinese hoax. Trump, you’ll be shocked to learn, wasn’t exactly telling the truth. Let’s focus on the climate claim. . . During Monday night’s presidential debate, Hillary Clinton said: “Donald thinks that climate change is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese. I think it’s real. I think science is real.” “I did not, I did not,” countered Trump. “I do not say that.” Clinton is correct.

Talking Points Memo: In First Debate, Trump Still Lying About His Support For the Iraq War

In the first presidential debate of 2016, Donald Trump continued to deny that he supported the Iraq War, launching into a bizarre rant about conversations he had with Sean Hannity as evidence of his opposition even though he told Howard Stern in 2002 that he supported the war.

Think Progress: Trump’s big lie about his tax returns

Donald Trump again dodged questions about why he has not released his tax returns: “I don’t mind releasing. I’m under a routine audit. It’ll be released, as soon as the audit’s finished, it’ll be released.” The IRS has made it clear that he is still free to release his returns and would not hold it against him, but Trump has not even been willing to release returns from 2008 and before — returns that are not under audit. The last time Trump did reveal his tax filing, in a report by gaming regulators, the documents showed he did not pay a dollar in federal income tax.

Bustle: Are Murders Up In New York? The NYPD Fact-Checked Donald Trump’s Claim That Homicides Are On The Rise

During a particularly tense exchange, Holt found himself in the middle of Trump’s spin zone as the candidate reasserted his narrative about stop and frisk and New York City’s murder rate. . .It’s doubtful that New York City viewers were too happy that their city was getting dragged by a native son — and doubtful that those police unions that have endorsed Trump are psyched about him questioning. Judging by the assistant commissioner’s tweets, New Yorkers could at least come together on setting the record straight.

The Boys’ Turn

126

By Eddie Castro

Last week it was about Grand Street Campus’ girls soccer team and their bond with each other that will hopefully lead the team towards a successful season this year. This week, let’s spread the love towards the boys soccer team. Eager to get on the field after their first two games were postponed, this past Saturday the boys were finally able to get on the field and the “extra rest” was beneficiary. The team stormed out the gates and put on a scoring display defeating Brooklyn Tech by a score of 6-1.

Despite their offensive outburst, it was the boys’ ball movement that was quite impressive. The team was able to control possession of the ball and was able to find holes and open lanes. Most important, they were able to contain Brooklyn Tech’s defense who came into the game undefeated at 2-0 and had not allowed a goal for their first two games. Junior player Ossama Diaby seemed very satisfied with the team’s first win of the season saying, “We were understanding each other and everyone kept moving around, just making space for each other. With that, the Wolves were able to score at will.

Not a bad way to start the season at all. However, the team knows it still has to continue to get better every game and keep up the great passing and offense. Perhaps this group of kids are playing with a chip on their shoulder. Last year, in what many feel was a Cinderella-like run towards the Public Schools Athletic League championship game, the Wolves lost a heart-breaking double overtime loss to Beacon. With that said, the first game was a statement game, and the message as well as the goal is quite simple, get back to the championship game and win it all!

Sports Notes: (Football) The Jets were able to bounce back from a tough Opening Day loss to the Bengals by defeating their division rival Buffalo Bills to capture their first win of the season. The team now heads to a rowdy crowd in Kansas City to play the Chiefs. The New York Giants are showing why their defense was worth investing $109 million dollars into. The team defeated the New Orleans Saints to go 2-0 in the season. The team will welcome in a division rival of their own as the 0-2 Washington Redskins come into town. This will also mark round two of the most anticipated receiver/cornerback matchup between the Redskins’ Josh Norman and the Giants’ Odell Beckham, Jr.
