Central Brooklyn’s “Senior” Stewards Building Community and The Vote

    Published on

With less than four weeks to go on the road to the Nov. 5 Presidential Elections, Vice President Kamala Harris’ popularity is higher than ever with older adults in Central Brooklyn. And it appears the rest of the nation is catching up. Polls last week revealed that the Harris/Walz force has surpassed the rival Trump/Vance ticket in popularity amongst this important voting segment.

As we approach Bed-Stuy Alive week, Our Time Press asked State Assemblymember Stefani L. Zinerman (A.D. 56) about the community work going on behind the scenes with such groups as Age Friendly Central Brooklyn, Inc. — an organization she supports –to sustain interest in voting, voting rights, and voting registration. Zinerman helped with the designation of Brooklyn as an age-friendly city in 2019. The organization has participated in such mobilization efforts as the now-historic Souls to the Polls initiatives plus working with churches and schools in a variety of programs. The members are, in fact, ambassadors for their community, as they are cheerleaders for Harris/Walz.

In the photo, immediately above, Age-Friendly Central Brooklyn, Inc. members participated in a kick-off event Monday at Bed-Stuy Restoration. In the other photo, the membership celebrated environmental wellness at Shirley Chisholm State Park in Brooklyn, and the centennial anniversaries of America’s national parks, and the year of Shirley Chisholm’s birth..
“In Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, we are fortunate to have vibrant and resilient community stewards who have long fought for civil rights and social justice,” Zinerman wrote in a text to Our Time Press, yesterday evening. “Most of them identify as Democrats and view Donald Trump as a threat to their way of life if reelected, especially given his divisive nature and recent attacks on affirmative action and women’s rights.

“The struggles of the past and memories of strong leaders like the late Cong. Shirley Chisholm fuels their determination to support a leader like Kamala Harris whose commitment to homeowners, small businesses, and education aligns with their values and vision for the future.

“Vice President Harris’ plans resonate deeply with those who seek a President dedicated to safeguarding rights and investing in our community’s potential.”
