Ms. Katie L. Davis, the community activist who has spearheaded a 60-year movement to honor leadership, emerging and established, in our community and develop and provide the support needed for it, will be honored next Thursday night, Dec. 7, during the Medgar Evers College Legends & Legacy Social Justice Scholarship Gala Dinner.

As the dynamic President of the Medgar Evers College Community Council, Ms. Davis has led the institution’s efforts to empower the next generations through scholarships. She has assured struggling students access to opportunities and developed the college’s annual student fundraising strategies.
Since 1980, the Council has provided more than 250,000 in scholarships to support young scholars who are excelling academically but who need financial support to complete their studies.
Officially, the Council serves as an advisory body to the president and college through community support, fundraising, and forums, and unofficially. Still, just as important, Ms. Davis is the connection Medgar Evers has to the community and college supporters.
The current Medgar Evers Community Council was first formed as the Ad Hoc Planning Committee, an important force in the early 1960s effort to create CUNY College No. 7, now known as Medgar Evers College. Ms. Davis, who will be moving from Brooklyn closer to relatives, was part of that early struggle. She says her heart will be here at Medgar and her Council.
Next Thursday evening, starting at 6p, Ms. Davis will be honored along with other leaders in their respective fields, professions, and industries, including The Honorable Annette Robinson, The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce, The Cochran Firm, Emblem Health, and The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation.
Ms. Davis’s extensive bio, submitted to us by Anne Bush of the Council, can be found online at www.ourtimepress.com and more details about the Legends and Legacy Social Justice Gala.
