John Henrik Clarke Weekend at CEMOTAP July 23-24 2011

CEMOTAP will mark the 13th Anniversary of the death of   Dr. John Henrik Clarke by hosting two programs related to the work of  Professor Clarke,   on July 23 and July 24, 2011.

On Saturday July 23, 2011 at 2:00PM  at CEMOTAP CENTER, Dr. James Turner  will speak  on the topic,  “The Continuation of John Henrik Clarke’s  Great and Mighty Walk.”

The following day, Sunday, July 24, 2011 also at 2PM at CEMOTAP CENTER,  psychiatrist Dr. James McIntosh will speak on the topic: “The Legal Lynching of Wesley Snipes, a John Henrik Clarke Cub.” (Mr. Snipes is currently serving a 3 year federal prison sentence after an all white jury convicted him of 3 tax misdemeanors despite acquitting  him of the related felony charges of Income Tax Evasion.)”

The two lectures are related by the fact that a documentary movie produced with the  financial help of  actor Wesley Snipes about the life of Professor John Henrik Clarke was called “A Great and Mighty Walk.” City College Professor Leonard Jeffries has said that,  “If Wesley Snipes had done nothing more in life than produce the movie a Great and Mighty Walk, he would still be worthy of support by African people.   “ A Great and Mighty Walk”  was also the phrase Dr. Clarke used to describe the  march of African People across the pages history.

13 years after the death of Professor Clarke,  has that walk ended and  if not should it?  Dr. James Turner an African Educator and founder of the African Studies and Research Center at Cornell University, will answer those and related questions during his lecture.   Dr. McIntosh will examine the significance of Mr. Snipes “legal lynching” in the context of  that same “Great and Mighty Walk.” CEMOTAP CENTER  is located at 135-05 Rockaway Boulevard, South Ozone Park Queens, N.Y.  Admission to both lectures  is free.

About the Speakers
James Turner is the founder of the Africana Studies and Research Center—founded 1969—and a professor of African and African American Politics and Social Policy at Cornell. He also organized Cornell’s Council on African Studies, forming a basis for the university’s interdisciplinary African Studies. Turner initiated the term “Africana Studies” to conceptualize the comprehensive study of the African diaspora and the three primary global Black communities-Africa, North America, and the Caribbean. The Africana paradigm is now widely adopted by educational programs as the epistemology for the field of Black studies. Turner was a founding member of TransAfrica, an African American lobbying organization. During the 1970s, he was a national organizer of the Southern Africa Liberation Support Committee, which pressed the anti-apartheid campaign in the United States. In 1974, he served as chair of the North American delegation to the Sixth Pan African Congress, and in 1973, he co-chaired the International Congress of Africanists in Ethiopia. As a Schomburg Research Fellow at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Turner conducted research on the political philosophy of Malcolm X that served as the basis for his work on the prize-winning PBS series Eyes on the Prize. The recipient of the Association of Black Sociologists’ Award of Distinction, he has served as president of the African Heritage Studies Association and on the editorial boards of several leading Black Studies journals.
Turner holds a B.S. from Central Michigan University, an M.A. from Northwestern University, a certificate in African Studies from Northwestern’s African Studies Center, and a Ph.D. from the Union Graduate School in Cincinnati.

JAMES McINTOSH, MD  is a  physician African media activist and author who currently practices psychiatry in Queens, New York.  He is a Co-Chair  and Co Founder of CEMOTAP (The Committee To Eliminate Media Offensive To African People)  and a member of the Board For The Education Of People Of African Ancestry.  He was a founding member of United African Movement and the first chairman of their Health Committee. He  was the  original moderator  and organizer of their weekly lecture series which continues today.  He is a much sought after lecturer and the author of several books and broadsides, including, The Unauthorized Psychoanalysis of Rudolph Giuliani, That Which Cannot Be Destroyed, State Rape and Prosecutorial Misconduct. He  is a former columnist for the Daily Challenge Newspaper, New York City’s only Black Daily Newspaper, and has been a frequent contributor to  newspapers such as, The Amsterdam News, Black American, Big Red News and The City Sun. Dr. McIntosh, holds a B.A. in Black Studies from Hunter College and an M.D.
from New Jersey Medical School of The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
