Friday, Jan. 27, Bed Stuy Flight Students Salute the Late Aviation Pioneer Bessie Coleman

We all know the power of black girl magic! From supreme court justice to Vice President of the United States, there’s no stopping the power of our brown sisters.
In celebration of Black History month, girl-power is taking full flight in Bedford-Stuyvesant as Dr. Ronald E. McNair Girl Flyers honor the legacy of Bessie Coleman, the first black native American aviator, during a special multimedia presentation.

The girl-empowered affair will take place tomorrow, 10:00 AM, Friday, January 27, at Dr. Ronald E. McNair Public School 5, 820 Hancock Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11233.
Participating Girl Flyers, who will be gifted Barbie Inspiring Women Bessie Coleman dolls from Mattel, will get a chance to showcase their high-flying skills during a simulated flight demonstration. In addition to student salutes and reports honoring Bessie Coleman, special guest Karyn Parsons, the actress who co-starred in the hit TV series Fresh Prince of Belair, will be reading excerpts from her latest published book “Flying Free: How Bessie Coleman’s Dreams Took Flight,” a children’s book celebrating Coleman’s prolific life.

The program will include a special guest appearance from Fresh Prince of Belair actress Karyn Parsons, author of “Flying Free: How Bessie Coleman’s Dreams Took Flight,” and flight demonstrations from the 4th & 5th-grade all-girl student pilots, who will also provide individual reports and presentations honoring Ms. Coleman.
In celebration of what would have been her 131st birthday, the legendary air pilot’s grandniece Gigi Coleman will join The Dr. Ronald E. McNair Girl Flyers for a special multimedia program. ‘
