This is a recording of a press conference held at the offices of the NAACP Legal Defense fund on February 10, 2008 announcing the settlement of an employment discrimination lawsuit against the NYC Parks Department.

“We as a people have the right and the ability to make our landmarks in this city,” said Paula Loving, a plaintiff in the multimillion-dollar settlement won by the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF) and private attorneys of the federal class-action lawsuit alleging race and national origin discrimination against the New York City Parks Department.

Ms. Loving was speaking of the frustration of watching young white college graduates move into management positions while experienced, veteran, African-American and Latino workers were passed over.

The total settlement, valued at $21 million dollars, not only pays the class of plaintiffs, but also instructs the Parks Department to set in place standards and transparency that are designed to bring fairness and disrupt a culture of white privilege
