We’ve all heard of former Lincoln basketball stars like Stephon Marbury, Sebastian Telfair, Lance Stephenson and Grand Street Campus star Dellin Betances, all who have been successful in the respective sports. Marbury is not in the NBA at the moment and Telfair’s career in the NBA has not progressed at the NBA level. Lance Stephenson is one of the rising NBA stars. After struggling as a starter pitcher, Dellin Betances has settled quite well pitching out of the bullpen for the New York Yankees. There may be another rising star coming out of our borough by the name of Richard Rose.

Rose is a sophomore at Boys and Girls High School and has represented his school well. At 5-10 and at 135 pounds, he registered the fastest time by a sophomore in the 600 meters at the Loughlin Games earlier this year. He also set an individual freshman record at the 600 meters with a time of 1:20.58. Rose also helped the 4×400 and the 4×800 relay teams win the indoor, state and national championship last season.  Senior teammate Anderson Denner summed it up best saying Rose is “just amazing”. As successful as Rose has been on the track, he has also excelled in the classroom as well. He is an honor student and he’s also a member of the Smart Scholars program at LIU Brooklyn.

It’s not every day we hear about Brooklyn athletes talked about this much. After the NBA playoffs, besides Carmelo Anthony, Lance Stephenson may be the most intriguing free agent on the market. Who would have thought a kid from Coney Island would headline that? What Richard Rose is doing is truly remarkable and shouldn’t go unnoticed considering Boys and Girls has made the news, usually for the wrong reasons. The neighborhood around the school is a tough area as well. The fact that this young guy remains humble and has displayed a significant sign of potential is not only good for him, but can and should be followed by all young kids and athletes of Brooklyn.

Sports Notes: (Football) Ota’s begin for both the Jets and the Giants. (Hockey) The New York Rangers are the current New York team turning heads as they are one win away from a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. Any questions or comments? E-mail me at castroeddie714@gmail.com
