It has not been a memorable season for the New York Knicks thus far. With a record of 21-36, they are by far one of the most disappointing teams in the league this year. Despite some current injuries, coach Mike Woodson has tried many different combinations to the lineup but to no avail. The Knicks have lost 3 straight games and 9 of their last 11 with losses that include the Sixers, Bucks, Magic and Kings, four of the worst teams in the NBA. The team is 2-9 in the month of February. What’s more frustrating is how they are losing these games. The team endured a heartbreaking loss due to a heroic game-winning shot by Maverick’s forward Dirk Nowitzki at the Garden on Monday night. On Saturday night in Atlanta, the Knicks held a 14-point lead going into the fourth quarter only to have the Hawks score 39 points in the period to come back and hand them the defeat. It was pretty much the same thing the night before when they played Orlando.
Usually when a team is struggling this badly, their star player has a lot to do with it. In this case, it’s not Carmelo Anthony that is stinking up the place, it’s his teammates who have not picked up the slack. Melo has been playing heavy minutes in games of late and eventually coach Woodson has to find time to rest him. Despite Melo’s struggles in the fourth quarter, he has scored 40 or more points in three of the last four games. The team has gone just 1-4 during that time.
With Monday’s loss to the Mavs, the Knicks dropped 6 games behind the Charlotte Bobcats for the eighth and final seed in the Eastern Conference. Around this time last year, the Knicks were the #2 seed just behind the Miami Heat. Anthony has gone on record in saying that he will test the free agent market. He has also gone on record saying that he is willing to take less money in hopes of attracting star players to come and play alongside him in New York. Whatever he decides, this current team clearly will not make the playoffs and if Melo now feels like he is not in a winning environment, will this make his decision easier? You only hope the Knicks can play better because this month so far, they have played dreadfuly.
Sports Notes: When it rains, it pours! Knicks guard Raymond Felton has had a nightmare of a season for the Knicks. With the team having had attempting to trade him, things just got worse for him. Hours after his team lost to the Mavericks, Felton was arrested on gun charges, one of the charges being criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, the other being possession of a firearm. His bail was set at $25,000 and he is due back in court on June 2. The Brooklyn Nets made history signing Jason Collins to a 10-day contract. On Sunday night, Collins became the first openly gay athlete in the four major sports. It has also been reported on Tuesday on NBAstore.com that Collins’ jersey, No.98, was a top seller.
